5th Grader Excellence

5th grade student Skylar Chapman is making headlines as the 1st place winner of the 36th Annual NAACP Detroit Branch Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner Art & Essay contest. Skylar beat out all 3-5th graders in Metro Detroit that entered the essay competition. She read her essay in front of a large audience at the winners reception last month. The adventure continues as Skylar will now be seated on the dais at the NAACP Freedom Fund Dinner, one of the largest sit down dinners in the country, and she has the opportunity to be part of a press conference as well. Her Language Arts teacher, Ms. Walker, is very proud of her.

In addition last school year, Skylar stood out among all 4th grade students in the district when she won the Bookstock Essay, an annual DPSCD contest for 4th grade students. As a result, this month Skylar was selected to do an interview with Stephen Henderson and Detroit Public Television, along with her former 4th grade Language Arts teacher, Ms. Holmes. They will be featured on an episode of American Black Journal. The episode will air on Detroit PBS on Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at 7:30p.m. Ms. Holmes praises Skylar on being a hard worker who cares about her education.
